The structural composition of Model [T] is dictated by its function. In order to create a large, open penthouse space for communal fabrication, the building is entirely hung on a T shaped truss, with cantilevers on each side. The atrium in the center of the design serves as a shaft for a gantry crane that runs through the penthouse. The cores and services are arranged within the two 'legs' of the truss, and all rentable office spaces are in the hung spaces. All of the steel beam selections were calculated by hand for this exercise, and we determined the 10 types of I-beams necessary to allow for all the necessary loads.
