A Subdivided Tsukiji
Creating Density Through Subdivision
Columbia GSAPP Adv Studio 3

Spring 2012
Post-WWII Tokyo rapidly repopulated its urban boundaries through a series of subdivisions. Different factors such as the 1964 Olympics and inheritance taxes pushed land ownership to be subdivided over generations. In this project, the same process is applied to the site of the Tsukiji Fish Market for the 2020 Olympics Main Media Center. The grid of subdivision is superimposed over the existing market to create a pattern of workspaces that horizontally integrate with the market below. This creates hyperdensity on a historic site to allow for a new streetscape to exist above the fish market in the future.
