    Spring 2012

What if the entire population of Japan lived in Tokyo? Using census and population data, this research investigates the patterns of density fluctuations in Tokyo and Japan. It identifies the generators of Tokyo's unique urban fabric over the last 100 years, including WWII, natural disasters, economic growth and domestic policies. With its declining population, Japan is projected to become 100% urbanized as quickly as 2055. If Tokyo's density can be expanded to that of Shinjuku, the entire population of Japan can fit within city boundaries. The existing urban fabric of Tokyo then serves as a good foundation for this proposed hyperdensity.
